Background

Dave McAfee is a Salt Lake City based performer and teacher, who is actively performing both as a soloist, orchestra musician, composer, and rock/metal guitarist. He has a history of collaborating with the Utah Classical Guitar Orchestra, the Millennial Choirs and Orchestra, UCG Guitar Ensemble, a local Rush tribute band; as well as other misc. bands and side projects. He has also worked as a studio musician and recorded on various projects for Sony PlayStation, etc.  Dave has also performed at Abravanel Hall, Kingsbury Hall, and Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah.  

Beginning his studies in 1983 at age 11, Dave’s primary classical instructors have included Dr. Jon Yerby, Cindy Spell, Sophie Stanley and David Norton. He has also performed and participated in Classical Master Classes with Pablo Sainz Villegas, Grisha Goryachev, Gohar Vardanyan, and Tengyue Zhang. 

On electric guitar, Dave has attended Master Classes with George Lynch (Dokken), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne), Yngwie Malmsteen, Al DiMeola, Frank Gambale, and other world renowned guitarists. 

Methodology

With a background in the Suzuki method, along with playing locally for 25+ years, Dave has taught all styles, drawing from his classical training and performance background to improve technique and musical understanding that benefits all levels and styles. From beginner to advanced levels, he uses a variety of teaching methods to create a personalized lesson to fit the needs of the student. Dave places an emphasis on learning guitar in a fun and effective way by teaching and using music the student enjoys, while incorporating standard notation and music theory where appropriate.
